Wellington musician Sam Morgan has released his debut album “Nicotine Dreams”. The album has been in the works for the past year and features Josh Brown on drums, Joseph Shepheard on bass and Jasmine Byrami on piano.
Recorded entirely at Massey University “Nicotine Dreams” features 12 accompanying artworks, by Embla Fred, that relate to the lyrical themes of each song. The accompaniment of Embla Fred’s artworks breathes extra life into the project. Each print catches the eye and they are all captivating to look at. I found myself lost in them for the entirety of my listening experience.
The album itself deals with relationships, breakups and loneliness. Although not exactly uncharted territory, Morgan offers enough personal experience in his lyrical themes to keep every track interesting. Each song, for the most part, is constructed around Morgan’s sombre guitar playing which usually builds up to a crescendo in the choruses which sees the entirety of the band and some backing vocals come in.
Morgan uses a series of dream-like melodies to wove the listener throughout the album, which creates an ultimately relaxing listening experience that’s coming from a more emotionally dark place.
If you’re a fan of artists like Matt Corby or Angus and Julia Stone then you will be a fan of “Nicotine Dreams.”
