Christchurch based Julius Black shines on anticipated debut EP, Dopamine.

A collection of five songs, ‘Dopamine’ sees Julius Black asserting himself as a talent to watch. Throughout ‘Dopamine’, Julius Black expertly weaves elements of alternative pop together to create something new and authentic.

The EP starts with the hauntingly captivating track ‘A Form Of Self Defence’. The track sees Black crooning over a melancholy piano ensemble, before heading into an emotional multi-instrumental climax. The title track ‘Dopamine’ is a standout on the EP. The song sees Black experimenting with auto tune and vocal effects on top of ever-evolving production.

The EP also features the two previously released singles ‘Mirrors’ and ‘Summer’, which were featured on an array of Spotify editorial playlists.

With production coming courtesy of Struan Finlay, the instrumentation on ‘Dopamine’ is nothing short of exceptional. Live instruments are delicately weaved between electronic production to create emotion and build tension.

Speaking on the project Black explains, “the project is mainly about anxiety and anticipation. The cover art is this idea I had around walking through a burning door to get to the next destination. Because sometimes that’s the feeling you get before you do something that’s important to you. That anxiety affects my relationships with people and that’s one of the main topics I cover in the EP.”
