Wellington-based alt-rock band Dream State Empire have released their debut EP “Why Fight It?”
Two time Battle of the Bands national finalists Dream State Empire have become known for their high energy live performances and bluesy rock riffs. “Why Fight It?” is a short four-track romp of songs that are a testament as to why the band took out the “Best Songwriting Award” at the 2019 Battle of the Bands.
Dream State Empire sounds like the love child of Jane’s Addiction, Velvet Revolver and Red Hot Chilli Peppers. “Why Fight It?” is an exceptional debut EP. Dream State Empire embraces the element of fun that rock music became synonymous within the late eighties and early nineties.
The EP opens with “Lunatic” is an upbeat rock song that sets the tone perfectly. It’s based around a catchy riff and introduces the powerful, scratchy vocals. “Why Fight It” is a stand out track. The quirky funk guitar tracks blend perfectly that crescendo into a glorious guitar solo. The closing track “Mexicano” highlights just how strong the rhythm section is. The slap bass riff during the breakdown is catchy and blends in perfectly with the guitar riffs.
Musically Dream State Empire are experimenting with lots of different styles. The guitar tracks incorporate a mix of bluesy licks, funk riffs and straight balls to the wall rock n roll. And it pays off well. Dream State Empire offers a range of catchy hooks and choruses. The EP captures the energy that the band has when performing live.
