And$um finishes the year strong with new single Relax, enlisting long time collaborators Dharmarat and Candice Milner. ‘Relax’ follows the release of And$um’s Late Nights EP and is a luscious slice of soulful hip-hop.
The song is a mellow affair with smooth bars and a smokey hook sung by Candice Milner. Speaking on the track And$um explains, “the whole track is about taking a step back and seeing the bigger picture. It’s easy to get wrapped up in everything and get the ego evolved, the track is just about not letting it all get to you.”
Supported by a perfectly fitting feature from Dharmarat, the lyrics of the track ruminate on anxieties, and the challenge of trying to relax despite being stressed out. Dharmarat and And$um reunite following their previous single ‘Dreaming’, which was featured on student radios across New Zealand. Candice Milner, another frequent collaborator also provides a meditative hook, with silky vocals that are a great addition to the song’s moody ambience.
The production of the song features a stripped-back instrumental with chilled out drums that lock you in a trance. As well as warm keys and a bouncy bassline that keep the vibe of the track calm and collected.
The new single sees And$um returning to his hip-hop roots, and is a great addition to his catalogue. Closing out a stressful 2020, with a much-needed reminder to relax.
